The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

May 30 - June 2, 1967 Norma Graduates College


Tuesday, May 30, 1967

Nice day, on the cool side and windy. Billie worked up to Chet’s then came home, mowed lawns. I done my regular work, made a stew chicken dinner. Dorothea and family gone to Vermont.



Wednesday, May 31, 1967

A nice day, on the cool side. I done my work regular work. Took care of Kim, picked greens. Started upstairs. Kennard called. Helen Smart and girls. Lila and Frances. In evening Dorothea, Dave and Jeff came to get Kim. Dot came up to see the house. Billie went to get her and took her home.



Thursday, June 1, 1967 Beautiful day

I did a big wash and the upstairs curtains. I also cleaned all of the two bedrooms, hallway and dark bedroom. Got supper. Did a big ironing after supper.




Friday, June 2, 1967

Another very nice day, temperatures in the 70s. Up early this morning, went down to Dorothea’s with Billie. Came home, had lunch of Italian sandwiches. Dorothea left about 2:30. We went to the Cemetery while Dorothea was here. Mrs. Allen, state nurse called. Billie up to Chet’s after supper. Betty and Carmen home early. I talked with Dr. Collier here today. Betty Smith called tonight. Norma out of college in flying colors, goes to work Monday for lawyer.
