The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

January 21 - 24, 1967


Saturday, January 21, 1967

A very nice day. I done up my work. Betty and I to town in p.m. I done my Saturday cleaning in p.m. Phyllis Chadbourne and granddaughter called. Billie working with Lawrence all day. Betty and girls here all afternoon and for supper. Kim just the same.



Sunday, January 22, 1967

A very mild day. I got up early, got the work done. Expecting Dorothea and Jeff to come. They didn’t until late afternoon. Dave didn’t have to work. They were here for supper. Betty and the girls were here all day and for supper. Fern and Lloyd called, they were going down to Irma and Charlie’s for supper. Billie gone fishing. Bill fixed Betty’s car. Betty and I called at her apartment. Esther called tonight to see about Kim. Miss Kennie and Dot this p.m.



Monday, January 23, 1967

A bad rainy day. Very dangerous on the highways. Betty couldn’t get to work. I washed. Washed and painted the babies highchair. Kim not too good today. Betty took the children home early. I cooked smelts for supper, very good. Billie and I called at Ferns in evening. Kim has another tooth.



Tuesday, January 24, 1967

Betty all done at Dr. Gauger’s because of the baby. The doctor rather she stay at home. Betty and girls here for supper. I made a cake and donuts. Kim ate better and seems to be better. Very mild 30 or more.
