The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

January 13 - 16, 1967


Friday, January 13, 1967

A very nice mild day. Betty worked until real late. Carmen here all forenoon. I done up my work, figured out my bills, cleaned out some of my desk draws. Amy and Pat called in p.m. Betty came up just before supper, took me to town. I paid Billie’s car payment for him. Went to the hospital to see Kim after supper. She was asleep. Billie to dentist.



Saturday, January 14, 1967

Partly cloudy, not very cold. I done up my work. Washed my floor and windows in kitchen. Made a cake. Bill, Carmen and I went down to the Lake to see the new house, then took Carmen home. Went down to Casco to see a truck. Fern, Betty and Carmen here for supper. Carmen staying all night. Billie picking up cattle with Lawrence all day. Billie called to see Kim. She was awake.



Sunday, January 15, 1967

Very foggy when we got up. Billie up at 2 AM to go smelting down to the ocean with Lawrence. Bill called out last night at midnight to sand. I done up my work. Carmen up here all night. Bill came home and slept. Dot here in p.m. and for supper. Also Lorraine called and Dorothea and Jeff here. Dave called in the evening with them. We all called at Fern and L’s.



Monday, January 16, 1967

A nice day. Not very warm. We left home here about 8 o’clock, went to the hospital and got Kim. Took her to the MMC in Portland. Called on Dorothea and family. Came home, we had a good fish supper. Betty got the fish at a market in Portland.
