The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

April 7 - 13, 1945 Roosevelt Died



Saturday, April 7, 1945

Put the separator outside to dry for first time. Windy not so cold. Washed kitchen windows. Minnie and children and Georgia and Jims kids called in eve.



Sunday, April 8, 1945

Nice day. Bill and Lloyd and Billy fixed celler drain and water went out of celler. They also fixed up well curb.



Monday, April 9, 1945

Went to town. Bill, Betty, Mama and I drawed out some money for my washing machine. I washed in p.m. Billie slept on pizza for first time. (?)


Tuesday, April 10, 1945

Nice day. We cleaned Mama’s room today. Billie built lane fence after he got home from school. Bill finished up in shipyard TODAY.



Wednesday, April 11, 1945

A BIG DAY. Bill went to Portland to get his release from the N.E. S.Y. been there two years nine months four days. I went with him. We had a swell time. Also got our new washing machine.



Thursday, April 12, 1945

Pres. Roosevelt died late this p.m. A shock to the world. Very hot day. We washed up new machine. Minnie very sick. Bill went to New Gloucester.



Friday, April 13, 1945

Very hot. Bill painted all day. Minnie went to the hospital today. Parallatie(?) shock one side. Merton Kimball came and got our pigs to dress.
