The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

August 20 - 23, 1976

Friday, August 20, 1976 Robert Very Bad

 

Robert still very bad. Bill didn’t work today at Saltman’s. He was down to Betty’s and did a few odds and end jobs. I was down there and helped her do her shell beans. Dawn was there also. Joy came tonight. Robert is very bad. Kim up here tonight again.

 

 

 

Saturday August way first 1976 Hot, Hot and Humid, Bob is about the same

 

Robert still very bad. His heart is very unstable. This is been a VERY HOT DAY. The humidity has been terrible. I defrosted porch refrigerator. I washed. I washed floors. Kim here. I did a dite of cooking. Esther here, we fixed some shell beans for Fern’s freezer.

 

 

 

Sunday, August 22, 1976 HOT AND HUMID again, Robert a dite better

 

It was another nice day again, very hot and humid. I done regular work. Washed, dusted, defrosted the kitchen refrigerator etc. I sat outside under the shade of the tree and read in p.m. Billie up to Chet’s, brought him down. Robert slightly improved. Sat up to eat. Bill watched TV in PM.

 

 

 

Monday, August 23, 1976

 

A very nice sunny day. I did more washing. Kimmy up here off and on today. We cooked. Bill up to camp some. Kimmy packing to go to the hospital tomorrow. She also went around and say goodbye to people. Zak up here some, down to Fern’s in evening.
