The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

May 24 - 27, 1976

Monday, May 24, 1976

It dawned CLOUDY again and a gray day late in p.m. We had a little open and shut clouds, a few minutes of sun during that time. I helped Betty all day to get her house cleaned done up for the coffee group meeting. I was down there all day. She got her porch floor painted. Bill didn’t do anything all day. Cliff had his septic tank pumped out. Esther and Carmen called in evening a minute. She brought her term paper up which was very good.

Tuesday, May 25, 1976 Another cloudy miserable cold day

Another one of those gray days. I done my work up, went down to Betty’s for a while. I did a dite of cooking. Bill painted the inside of Camp Encore bus. Billie got the application back from Augusta. Bill did help Cliff with the tractor to get his septic tank cover out. Still working on it today. Lloyd not too good.

Well I done up most of my work then I went down to Betty’s and done her work while she done the chores. Her coffee group meets there today. I came home, I picked over some papers etc. It was another cloudy showery miserable day. Bill painted on the bus and finished it. It looks very nice.

Thursday, May 27, 1976 A FAIR DAY

While today we got out from under these black heavy clouds and rain. Yet we did have some black clouds go over. Heavy wind and a sprinkle but all in all it was a NICE day. Mild. I went down to Betty’s early to get Zak ready for school. Betty took KIM to the dentist appointment. She is now in the process of getting BRACES on her teeth. I came home, I did a very big wash. Esther over here tonight. Carmen and Kim called when they rode by on their bikes. Billie Deming went to Portland with Betty and Kim to look for a car for himself. He found a van, just what he hopes to get.
