The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

July 7 - 9, 1976

Wednesday, July 7, 1976 MOWED WALT’S HAY, $27

Fair today, quite warm, there was a dite shower today. I was down to Betty’s in a.m. She, the girls and I got rest of the house cleaned up. It looks very nice. About 3:30 their guest came. Walt came home early. Vince came about 10:30 to mow the hay. Got it all done. I hope now it won’t get wet. Mr. Saltman called, he paid Bill. He wants him to do some more work. He went up tonight to see what he needs for lumber. I defrosted my refrigerator in p.m., made salad. I washed.

Thursday, July 8, 1976 Robert had a heart attack

A pretty good day. Lawrence raked and baled some hay and they got a lot of it in. It wasn’t very good because it got wet. A couple showers on it. Robert in the hospital again, he had a heart attack this morning. Betty and family’s company left about noon. They all had a good time. They said they would call in next week when they leave to go home.

Friday, July 9, 1976 Finished Haying at Walt’s, New Mowing Machine

It has been quite a nice day. It was nice and hot in a.m., in p.m. it got to be a little clearer and cooler. Nice hay weather. They came and worked on the hay and at one they began to bail hay and also started to haul it. Debbie, Laurie, Carmen, Betty, Dawn, Bill, David and Billie all loaded and unloaded. Walt came home early and he helped. Dorothea came up with David and was here for supper. We were very glad to have her and them both for supper. We went to the hospital to see Lloyd and Robert. Lloyd is okay but Robert isn’t very good. Today they brought the new mowing machine, a Massey mower. We are some pleased with that. Was lucky to get rid of the other one, Oliver mower. Kathy is at Betty’s tonight again.
