The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

April 21 - 24, 1976

Wednesday, April 21, 1976 a nice day

I didn’t do too much today. I did a dite of cooking, cooked a good roast of beef. I went to town and done my shopping. Betty to the coffee group meeting. In p.m. the Berry girls came up, they rode up on their bikes. They had a good time, walked down to the woods to the brook, took the donkey or burro. He was a big show off. Kimmy had company in p.m., Laurie Smith. Zak came up here for supper and to stay all night and tomorrow. He has been very good so far. Billie feels better tonight.

A rainy day. In p.m. very heavy showers. It thundered and lightning a lot. I cleaned my lower kitchen cupboards and draws. Zak here all day and he was a real good boy all day and last night. Betty took Carmen and Kimmy to the doctor and dentist in Portland. They ate supper out. Walt came home sick with chills. Bill worked at Bob’s on the front end loader that belongs on his tractor.

Friday, April 23, 1976 CLOUD AND SHOWERS

This has been a cloudy showery day. Worked at Betty’s all day, we cleaned the kitchen and utility room cupboards. Esther came over and helped, if she hadn’t we could not have got them all done. Carmen up here tonight to stay, that is if her asthma does act up. It cleared about three this p.m. It became sunny but much cooler. Bill was completely pooped when he got home from Roberts after working on the loader. He has worked up there for two days. He went to bed as soon as supper was over and slept right through. Also laid down before supper. Lloyd isn’t very well.

Saturday, April 24, 1976 FENCED

Billie and Carmen did this fencing today. Then they went down and done it down to Walt’s. Carmen had company. Then Betty helped to finish it. Betty, Zenya and Lisa all rode their horses. They had a good time. Kimmy and Zak played good together. Walt worked doing soil tests all day. Bill went fishing all day and when he got home tonight he had had it. His leg were in awful condition. I done regular work, washed, washed some windows, cooked, baked beans and done some figuring.
