The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Thursday, June 10, 1976 LAURIE CAME

Another nice hot day. Very nice weather. I done up regular work and a wash. My machine broke so I took them down to Betty’s. She washed and dried them. She had company for breakfast. Linda and Mary Berry and another lady called. Milan out riding around here and there. Betty and I got ready and Betty came and we left about 2:30. We got Fern, picked the three kids up at school. We got some clipping shears in Portland at Sears. Got to the airport about four. We had a nice supper and at 6:53 Laurie’s plane arrived. She looks so nice, neat and pretty. She is a very nice person. She was so pleased to get here. Joy and family will come in two weeks.

Betty made me a double batch of tuna fish casserole. Billie’s car to garage today. Betty had to pick him up at noon. Bill up to Camp Encore to work. Bill Walker called in late p.m. Esther and kids called today. Tonight Esther and Cliff called. We had bad thundershowers and heavy winds. Milan and I were downtown in one bad wind blow. This p.m. the horses and colt got their shots. The donkey was operated on. Dr. Gauger and his other doctor were there for over 1 ½ hours. Donkey was kind of out during the operation.

Saturday, June 12, 1976 COLD MILAN BETTY LEFT 2 AM

Well this is been a cold day, heavy winds, a lot of black wind clouds. It is some different than the past few days of extreme heat. This p.m. it cleared and became sunny. I done regular work, washed, waxed floor. I did a washing, cleaned up the room downstairs. Bill and Billie mowed lawns. Bill mowed at Betty’s and he rototilled the garden. It looks very neat and nice all around our house. It is trimmed up all around. Carmen, Laurie called, Lawrence, Kim, Zak, Betty and Walt. This morning Milan and Betty left for their home at 2 AM. We had a nice visit with them and enjoyed them very much.
