The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

June 13 - 16, 1976 Bill Sick and Ed Babbitt Hospitalized

Sunday, June 13, 1976 a very nice day

I done my regular work. I washed out the clothes we had after taking showers and bath. I ironed it. About 2 PM we went down to Fern’s for a get together for Lloyd’s 75th birthday which will be June 15. Had a very nice lunch and an enjoyable afternoon. Dorothea, Dave, Betty, Walt and children, Esther and Cliff. And much later Billie came. It was very nice and Esther helped her or did it all. Billie brought Chet out to his place.

A quite nice day. Had a few rain showers but nothing to upset the day. It was quite warm all day. I done my regular work, went down to Betty’s a little while. I cooked a roast of pork supper, made a custard pie. Betty and I went to town in a.m. Laurie went over to Robert’s. Bill went to work but didn’t stay, he has stomach trouble.

Tuesday, June 15, 1976 BILL SICK, a nice day, on the hot side. Ed Babbitt

It has been a very nice sunny day, about 80° temperatures. I done regular work, washed, got caught up on reading. Mr. Saltman called. Bill quite sick and weak today. I went down to Betty’s after supper. Billie went to see the man about fixing the tractor mower but can’t get it done because we would have to haul it to him at Casco. Kim to the dentist, had a little more work done on teeth. Today Ed Babbitt entered the Osteopathic Hospital. He is in very serious condition. I’m afraid this is the last time he will go to the hospital. I’m very sorry for them, a wonderful couple.

Wednesday, June 16, 1976 HOT HOT 80 and 90°

Another nice hot sunny day. I have washed and been very busy all morning. In p.m. took Bill down to the hospital. He looks bad, lost a lot of weight. I’ll be glad when he gets over this spell and gets back to work. Betty took us down. Laurie over to Robert’s to picked berries today, poor kid. Kim and Zak up a little while before supper. Ed Babbitt is not at all good, his mind is beginning to show signs of a serious illness (cancer).
