The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

June 6 - 9, 1976 Uncle Milan And Aunt Betty Arrive For A Week

Sunday, June 6, 1976

 

A fair day. Some cloudy and not too hot. Milan’s folks got here early about 8 AM. We talked all day and visited. Bill up to camp a little while.

 

 

 

Monday, June 7, 1976

 

Cloudy and rainy in a.m. Milan couldn’t do much but late in p.m. it cleared off. We went down to Betty’s. He and Betty down town. I done regular work. We called at Betty’s to see her antiques etc.

 

 

 

Tuesday, June 8, 1976 HOT HOT

 

This is been a very HOT day. I did some washing. Betty over to Fryeburg to her sisters’. Milan went riding around. Bill worked at Camp Encore, came home early, it was so hot. Betty down to Dawn’s. Ed is getting much worse. Betty Smith and I drove up to Delores’s after supper. Betty is a good driver.

 

 

 

Wednesday, June 9, 1976

 

A beautiful day. Not too uncomfortably hot. I done up regular work, went to town. Ironed, made a cake, then got ready for the cookout. Made drinks, lemonade, koolaide and tea, coffee, fixed the food. Betty sat out trying to get a tan. She helped in PM. Esther came over and help too. KIM rode her bike to school today. Carmen’s class went to WCSH TV station in Portland. Demings, Hortons, Smiths and Yates here for cookout. Bill worked at Camp Encore.
