The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

May 31 - June 2, 1976

 

Monday, May 31, 1976

 

Another nice hot day. I did my regular work, did a load of washing, the old winter jackets etc. I did my ironing, washed and washed and waxed my kitchen floor. I fixed one of my dresses which took a long time. I made a cake, got supper. Carmen called a minute. Today a boy came up to see Carmen. This was a first. Billie went with Lawrence to the auction today. Keith called tonight. This evening we had a dite of rain which has helped the garden and the flowers which have just been set out.

 

 

 

Tuesday, June 1, 1976

 

Raining when we got up, it cleared up about noon or a dite before. I washed. Went down to Betty’s early in a.m. Betty down to Dawn’s all day or till middle of p.m. I did some odds and end jobs, fixed a couple dresses. Billie worked on tractor mowing machine. Betty here in p.m., her snaps came back, taken the night Flicker was born. Very good, all of them. In evening Esther came over and Cliff. Esther, Betty and I down to Fern’s to show them the pictures.

 

 

 

Wednesday, June 2, 1976 A Beautiful Day

 

It dawned bright and sunny. I got my work done up. I did a washing, washed windows and a big ironing. Betty to coffee group meeting. Kimmy to a cookout and the last Girl Scout meeting for the year. They got their badges. Kim was pleased with hers. Bill worked on mowing machine. Mr. Saltman came and got the bus.
