The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

May 16 - 19, 1976

Sunday, May 16, 1976

It has been another very nice day except way late in p.m. it got cold and windy. I done regular work and a very big washing. I cleaned the cupboards by the kitchen door. Bill painted back porch and steps. Billie went up and got Chet, took him around, he came and saw Billie’s cattle and then the colt. He was up to his house while Billie mowed lawns. He gave Billie a few things. Late this p.m. we went down to Betty’s for a first cookout. It was so good but it got awful cold. Yates, Demings and Crooks was there, guest Lisa Smart was there.

Monday, May 17, 1976 all done housecleaning

A cloudy dreary day. It cleared a little in p.m. Betty came up and we cleaned the cupboards and closets in the living room. I did some other jobs. Now my housecleaning is all done. I haven’t seen the colt today. Bill took me to town in p.m. He changed the oil in cars and truck.

Tuesday, May 18, 1976 Bill planted a row of peas, PERMANENT

Bill planted a row of peas. I done regular work. Did a dite of washing. Made custard and brownies. Shampooed my hair. Went to June’s in p.m., got my spring permanent. In p.m. Dorothea came up and she liked the new baby colt at the Horton farm very much. She visited with Betty’s folks a long while. She was here for supper and visit a little while. It has rained, showered, thunder, lightning today.

Wednesday, May 19, 1976 RAIN

We sure are having a rain this week. It has rained so hard early this morning. Thundershowers too. A miserable day, rained hard all day long. It is so disgusting, everything is soaked. Bill didn’t do anything all day. I done up my regular work, made a batch of molasses cookies and did nothing. I went down to Betty’s a few minutes early this morning. Billie down to Betty’s for a spaghetti supper.
