The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

June 27 - 30, 1976

Sunday, June 27, 1976

 

This is been a cloudy and dreary day, rained all a.m. It cleared late in p.m. I washed anyway and hung the clothes out, they dried quite well. Billie mowed lawns all day here and up to Chet’s. Bill done the big mowing. Zak up here today. He was very good. He is getting to be a much better boy. He is trying so hard to be good and he is good. He still likes his new bike. This morning Carmen and Laurie (Wolff) were up here for breakfast. They had a good time. We went to see Lloyd in the hospital. He is much better. Laurie went home tonight.

 

 

 

Monday, June 28, 1976 not a very good day

 

I did a dite more washing. I was busy all day. Bill worked at camp all day. Came home late in p.m. and Mr. Saltman had paid him. He paid the house insurance and put away $100 towards the taxes. Zak stayed at Fern’s tonight. Kim stayed up here all night. Zak was so pleased to be down to Fern’s for the night. I called at Betty’s in a.m. to see some things.

 

 

 

Tuesday, June 29, 1976 cloudy and a dite of sun

 

Kimmy here this morning. It was cloudy in a.m. It cleared away later. It was quite warm. Bill, Kim and I went to Fryeburg looking for mowing machine parts. Kim stayed up here tonight. Zak has company, David Nevers. Laurie home with her folks tonight. Betty went over later in the evening too get Laurie to come over so they can practice their play.

 

 

 

Wednesday, June 30, 1976 Rain and Showers

 

Another miserable day. Rain, thundershowers and all. I done some odds and end jobs. Kim here part of the day than Zak and David here all forenoon while Betty was at the coffee group. Bill just doing nothing, couldn’t work at camp. Tried to fix the part for the tractor but couldn’t. Ed about the same and Lloyd too.
