The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

September 27 - 30, 1964





Sunday, September 27, 1964

Another nice day. Got up at 9:30, had breakfast. Bill down to cigs. I done some writing. We sat around and talked. Dave up about noon, had dinner. Watch TV then Bill and I got ready, came over to George and Pegs, had a nice time. For tea Stephen and Hilda here, they saw us home. George away for a couple weeks.



Monday, September 28, 1964

Up kind of early. Went down, got some flowers and Bill, Dave and I took them out to the Cemetery. We walked almost a mile up to there. Then back to town, had a bus out to Western Cemetery way at the western end of the town. Both very pretty cemeteries. We walked way back to town. What a hike, we had dinner and about three took our baths. Came over to Peg’s. Had supper then WALKED again way up to the Academy where the pictures were shown of Grahams school trip last summer. Then back home, had fish and chips and candy. In bed at about one.



Tuesday, September 29, 1964

Bill and I down town in a.m., came home had dinner. Talked etc. Beat and I out for cards and she went to the shop to get meat for supper. Had supper over to Steve’s and Hilda’s. For evening watched TV. Had fish and chips, came home then to bed. Peg gave me some things.



Wednesday, September 30, 1964 Letter from Dorothea

Another nice day. Bill out, got his haircut. Came home. Bill and I up to call on Miss Nan Crook and Betty and Jim Milne. Came home for dinner. Then in p.m. Bill and I up to the duck pool and water tower. We walked to the top and we could see all over Arbroath. We fed the birds bread and took snaps. Peg up to call on a lady at the hospital. Came home, had supper. Peg, Bill and I called on George’s aunt and mom. Came home. Beat called on us in evening.
