The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

October 17 - 20, 1964

Saturday, October 17, 1964

Fair today, quite mild. Betty and I rushed around, got our cooking and work done and took off for Norway at 1 PM. We did a lot of grocery shopping at Simpson’s Market, also Betty stopped at Newberry’s and shopped for she, Mike and Carmen. Came home, had beans, brown bread and Fern up for supper. Mike had to work tonight to make up for the Monday night we were supposed to come home. Holly and Steve here for supper.

Mild. Cloudy and rainy all day. Bill better today. He was up early and worked on the barn. He and Billie got a lot done on it today. Betty cleaned up her whole apartment very well. Also I cleaned mine up good. They both look very nice. Mike worked all day as usual. Kennie, Dot, Bob, Debbie and Lori, Fern and Lloyd called today.

Did a big wash. Had to go to town in early p.m. Called at Fern and Lloyd’s. It began to rain in late p.m. and rained hard all night.

Clear in a.m. Clouded in p.m. and rain. I done up the housework. Got Esther’s letter off. I cooked a boiled dinner, very good. Betty made a birthday cake. We had Fern up for her birthday. Betty over to Joys to get her hair cut in p.m. In evening when Betty took Fern home she got stuck in the mud and rain up here on the new road. Bill and Mike had to get her out.
