The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

November 14 - 17, 1967


Tuesday, November 14, 1967 Got Pig meat home tonight.



A very clear pretty day. I did my ironing. Wrote to Dorothea. Called on Minnie a little while. Bill brought the iron rails home from Jake Knights. Dot here for supper and evening. Billie brought the fresh pork home tonight, it is very nice meat. He and I wrapped it. Fern, Lloyd called. Snow flurries. Betty called on the phone today.



Wednesday, November 15, 1967 Snow, warm here

Snow in Concord








This morning when we got up he saw the first snow on the ground for the season. Got about 7 or 8 inches. I cooked a piece of corned beef for our boiled dinner tonight. I tried out the lard and salted the pork down. This house is very cozy and warm. I love it here. Bob here for supper. Bill worked a little while after supper.



Thursday, November 16, 1967


I cleaned up the house. Fern and Lloyd called. I did a dite of washing. Cleaned out some snow around. Got Esther’s letter. She is all excited about Susan going on to college. I wrote Es and Susan. Sent Es’s birthday card. Billie brought rest of the beef home tonight.




Friday, November 17, 1967


A beautiful day. I did some figuring. Got my store list made out. Had vegetable hash for supper, very good. Bill and I to town after supper. I shopped for Thanksgiving. I cleaned my pots and pans this morning.
