The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

October 25 - 28, 1967


Wednesday, October 25, 1967 Warm

Cloudy. Gordon shingled the outside of breezeway on front. I picked over boxes, cleaned china closet and buffet. Worked in kitchen mostly.



Thursday, October 26, 1967 Mild

A nice day, warm day. Fern, Lloyd called. Lloyd and Mr. Downey, Aunt Ava called. Gordon put up the closets in living room and the archway. I like it. I called Betty, Kim came home this afternoon from the Concord Hospital. Bill and I called on the Thomases. Dorothea looks bad. We went over to their new house. Bill tried out a Cadillac car from Jake Knights.



Friday, October 27, 1967

Cloudy in a.m. It cleared off. Gordon came about 10 AM, he changed the archway and put up frame in Bills room for closet. About noon Betty, Carmen, Kim and Dorothea came. Dorothea very sick and Carmen not well. Both were in bed. Kim better. Betty took Jeff home with her. Bill took me to town. Dorothea called me in eve from Lorraine’s. Going to doctors in morning.



Saturday, October 28, 1967

Cloudy and light rain. It cleared off about noon. Warm and nice. Billie done a lot of his fencing. Bill worked on his lawn. Gordon here and made closets. In p.m. he and Bill put wallboard on the partitions. Fern up for supper. I got a call from Dorothea, she thinks she is better.
