The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

October 5 - 8, 1967


Thursday, October 5, 1967 A nice hot day

I done up my work. Fern came up to see my rug samples. Later Dorothea and Jeff came and I went to the fair to Fryeburg with them. We had a good time. I enjoyed it very much. Gordon worked out in the yard grading the lawn. It looks nice. I called at Ferns in evening.



Friday, October 6, 1967 Betty Walt and children came for their first weekend visit

Cloudy, not quite so warm. I went to Portland with Fern and Lloyd. He went to see about his Social Security. Also done a few other errands. Got home about 230. Billie had the day off for the Fryeburg Fair. He helped Gordon, they put some wallboard up in living room. About 9:30 PM Betty, Walt and children came for their first weekend visit. It was so good seeing them.



Saturday, October 7, 1967

Cold all day, it was sunny. Betty, Carmen and Walt to the fair in p.m. Came home, had supper. Fern here too. Betty and Walt went to the fair in evening. Dave, Dorothea and Jeff called in evening. It was awful cold. They came from the fair and was so cold. Bill, Gordon and Billie worked on the ground out here. It looks so nice. I slept with Carmen till Betty and Walt came about midnight.



Sunday, October 8, 1967

Cloudy all day. A dite warmer. We didn’t get up very early. Gordon here and he and Bill put some wallboard up and did some insulating. Betty, Walt and kids went over to Waterford, got some apples. Also called at Lil’s for a little while. Bill, Betty, Walt, Fern, Lloyd watched the ballgame. I got dinner. Kim slept. Carmen at Mark’s. Billie worked at Chet’s. Betty and family left for home about 5:30 PM.
