The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

February 24 - March 1, 1954



Wednesday, February 24, 1954

Very nice day. Check from Ayers. Betty gone to movies with Sara. Billie helping Lloyd saw wood. Betty cleaned up the house this morning, done a very good job.



Thursday, February 25, 1954

Went down with Bill early this morning. Had a permanent at Joan’s. Raining. Bill only worked half-day. He and Billie downtown got grain, each a new cap. Over to the doctors Dr. Newth. Bill got pills. Lida wrote me a note with a $10 check in it. Billie and I up to Aunt Ava’s in evening. Donnie’s mother called in the evening.



Friday, February 26, 1954

Nice day. Did the regular work. No letter from Dorothea. Blanche, Joe and Ruth went to Connecticut to Kenneth’s wedding. Betty up to Joy’s in p.m. and watched TV.



Saturday, February 27, 1954

Nice day. Did work, cooked etc. Bill and I went to town got groceries etc. Bob came over got 1 qt. milk.



Sunday, February 28, 1954

Nice day. Raymond called. Charlie and Jean, Bob, Rosalie and Holly called in evening. Mama went down to Ferns. Stayed all night. Donnie better today. Snow began in Cleveland.



Monday, March 1, 1954

Town meeting. I washed. Evelyn Ridlon called, it was cloudy. Billie didn’t feel too good after he got home from T. M. Cold and sore throat. Mama still down to Fern’s. Dorothea didn’t go to school because of snow.
