The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

July 29 - August 2, 1954 Dorothea's Birthday and Betty Returns



Thursday, July 29, 1954

Milan’s folks came this morning. Mrs. Cox came over here today. We had a birthday cake and ice cream for Dorothea tonight. Raymond, Fern, Lloyd, Milan’s folks and Mrs. Cox here. She got a lot of nice gifts.



Friday, July 30, 1954

Still getting ready for Betty. She got her parakeet tonight at Waltham Massachusetts. Milan took me to town.



Saturday, July 31, 1954

A nice day except for a bad shower in p.m. Brud, Verna, Betty and Nola Raye got here about 11 AM. She was pleased to get here, had a very good time up there. Brud’s family and Kennard here also Milan’s family and Mrs. Cox here for dinner and supper. Dolores came up a little while.



Sunday, August 1, 1954

Milan and Betty went fishing today. Billie, Milan, Norma, Betty and I over to see the bulls at Brownfield. Brud and Verna called in p.m. on way home.



Monday, August 2, 1954

Good day. I washed. Mrs. Cox went home today.
