The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

April 17 - 21, 1954 Easter Sunday



Saturday, April 17, 1954

Rained hard all day. Milan took me downtown in his new Ford. Betty Smith picked over her things upstairs. Bill, Milan, Betty, Norma and Holly watched TV in p.m. We all watched it in evening. Fern and Lloyd came up to. Raymond called in evening to. Rained hard all night.



Sunday, April 18, 1954 Easter Sunday

Cleared off this morning when we got up, it got windy. Billie took off storm windows, done some raking. Betty cleaned out the playpen. Milan’s folks went back this morning. Mama went back with them for a visit. Bobby Hatch, Joy, Robert and Ann Austin called. Ilan and kids came down in eve. Rosalie came home.



Monday, April 19, 1954

Washed and ironed, kind of cloudy. Cleared in p.m. Billie and Bobby hauled apple trees off. Brud and Verna called in p.m. I made pie for Billie to take to lodge. Worked up in shed chamber some.



Tuesday, April 20, 1954

Very nice day. Betty and I finish shed chamber. Awful hot in p.m. Evelyn and Gail called. Caleb Fleck family and Fern’s family up in eve.



Wednesday, April 21, 1954

Aunt Ava and Uncle Lewis and Aunt Linnie over in evening. Been very hot today. Cleaned back porch and Billie and I cleaned tie up in this barn and the grain room. Ate on porch for first time.
