The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Tuesday, March 16, 1954

Billie sent for his license today. I ironed. A nice day. Records came but they aren’t the right kind.



Wednesday, March 17, 1954

Nice day but still cold and windy. Cooked. Kennard and Raymond here in the evening a few minutes. Jim Emerson came up to see new calf. Billie, Betty and I went up to Bob’s to get a book for Milan. Watched TV a little while. It was good. Barbara called.



Thursday, March 18, 1954

Very nice day but still cold and windy. I cleaned out the deep freeze radiator. Cleaned up the house. Barbara called and brought Dorothea’s pictures of the slumber party. Mama went down to the barn to see the cattle today.



Friday, March 19, 1954

Cooked. Billie went over to Harrison with Dennis and got his haircut. Nice day.



Saturday, March 20, 1954

Nasty bad day, got about five or 6 inches of wet snow this morning when we got up. Called Bill about 5. I went to town with Lloyd this morning. Bill began on his new medicine today over to Dr. Newth. Fern and Lloyd up in evening.



Sunday, March 21, 1954

Bill over to Dr. Newth again for another shot. Raymond called this morning and Kennard came up.



Monday, March 22, 1954

Billie 23 today. Nice clear day but windy and kind of cold. Washed. Evelyn and Gail here. I went to town with Evelyn. Gail got into Betty’s pennies. Billie went to lodge with Raymond tonight. Wayne going in tonight. Bill over to Dr. Newth.

Tuesday, March 23, 1954

Warm. I ironed. Evelyn Ridlon called and fixed the chair. Bill over to the doctors tonight. Uncle Lewis sick, Aunt Ava called this a.m.
