The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

February 28 - March 1, 1976

Saturday, February 28, 1976 partly cloudy, not too cold, up to 45s

I did some cooking, swept, dusted, done regular work and washed and waxed kitchen floor. Cliff Harmon died last night. Lorraine’s father-in-law. Billie gone with Lawrence down to Springvale and around buying cattle. Kimmy went to a sledding party with the Girl Scouts today. I got my papers all read and caught up. David called at Betty and Walt and there for supper. He talked with them. He also called here.

It has been a cloudy dismal gray day. I done regular work. Betty and family went down to Fern’s for dinner. Billie went up, got milk for us, Bob and Betty’s. He called at Robert’s, he isn’t very good. Also Billie called on Chet at the hospital, he isn’t as good today as he was last Friday. Bill has just sat and read books and went to bed.

Monday, March 1, 1976

A nice sunny day after the clouds got broken away. I did a big wash. I went down to Betty’s in a.m. She went to the dentist and had a tooth worked on all day. A doctor in Mechanic Falls got it ready and another in Portland filled it. Bill didn’t do anything today. He done chores and a few odds and end jobs. Betty and I went to town in late p.m.
