The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

March 28 - 31, 1976 Carmen Home

Sunday, March 28, 1976 a nice day very windy

A nice sunny windy day. Betty and Zenya went to see Carmen today. She is about the same. She was very pleased to see Zenya, they played cards and had a good time. I did my washing and done my regular work. Bill and Ilan worked on the ditch. Billie went up and got milk. Lloyd went with him. Lloyd is still very weak on that leg. Kim up here. Today also Walt and Zak called. A man here today to see the tractor and make a deal. Many bare spots in the field tonight. Snow went a lot. It is cooler tonight.

Monday, March 29, 1976 Billie back to work

A beautiful day, but that wind came up again. It blowed very hard last night and yesterday but died down when we got up. They came up again about seven. I washed and done a big ironing, down to Betty’s to help her do up her housework. I done a lot of things today. I also worked on the puzzle a little. I cooked two blueberry pies and cooked a pot roast for Betty supper. She got home really early today.

Who remembers the Bay City Rollers?!?

Tuesday, March 30, 1976 a nice day CARMEN HOME

Down to Betty’s, we cleaned her house or most of it, then we got ready and went to get Carmen. When we got there the Dr. didn’t show up until about 1 o’clock to discharge her. She was very sick when we left the hospital. Effects from the spinal examination. Poor girl, I hope she never will have any more trouble. To me, there wasn’t anything done for her in the hospital except tests, examination and x-rays and nothing to cure her back and stomach troubles. During her short life she has been injured in some way.

Wednesday, March 31, 1976 cloudy

Down to Betty’s early. She had the coffee group there today. I came home, cooked a ham, went to town. Mrs. Fred Dodge here a little while. Her husband is showing a guy where to cut some wood. I worked on the puzzle tonight, I finished it. A man called about the tractor. Also Mr. Tilton called. Billie Deming here for supper. He enjoyed the meal very much. Carmen was coming, but her head ached and I sent her supper down her. She isn’t too well yet. I’m worried about her. David called and asked Bill, Billie and me out for supper Friday night.
