The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

April 1 - 4, 1976

Thursday, April 1, 1976 RAIN

Betty took Lloyd to town to do his shopping. I was down to Betty’s while she was gone. Lloyd did not go. Carmen still having headaches and not feeling good. It was a very heavy rain all day. I came home from Betty’s. I did my desk work, figured out the bills and made out two orders. Bill didn’t do anything, it was so rainy. Keith Bryant over tonight. Betty and Berry girls down to Windham and got Italian sandwiches for supper.

Friday, April 2, 1976

A beautiful day. I was down to Betty’s this morning. Billie didn’t go to work, he got ready and went to the doctors. An appointment with his Dr. Timothy. Went to Dorothea’s and Dorothea took him in. Betty took me down and Dorothea and Dave took us out for supper. We went to Vallee’s Steakhouse. First we went to a ride out to Falmouth Foreside. We enjoyed the evening very much. A delicious supper. If all is well the doctors said he didn’t need to see Billie again until first of the year.

A quite good day. Betty, Zak, Kim and I went to Portland. We did Kim’s birthday shopping. Kim had such a good time and enjoyed it very much. Zak was quite good all day. Bill and Billie down to Blackberry Hill Farm to see that tractor again. They are going to take it.

Sunday, April 4, 1976 A nice sunny day, windy

A nice sunny day, on the windy side. I was very busy all day. I took a bath, got breakfast and done up the regular work. I changed the beds, washed, washed floor, ironed, got the clothes in and ironed a big ironing. I made a pie and a soup. Betty, Walt and kids were here. Zak was here for supper. He had a bath up here. Toenails cut too. Fern and Lloyd called today, Fern looks awful.
