The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

On the cold side. I done my regular work, washed windows, washed a small washing. This morning we got the awful bad news from Dawn about Ed. He has a lung cancer which has spread to his head. I am very sorry to hear of this. He and Dawn were very close and doing fine for themselves. Robert isn’t very good today. Chet seems a lot better but not much strength. Betty up to New Hampshire with Dawn to get her pig she had dressed. She also helped Dawn take care of meat. Bill and Ilan went fishing this p.m. Betty and I called at Fern’s this evening.

A most beautiful day. In late p.m. it got hazy and clouded up. I did a wash. I washed windows on the outside and some on the inside. I ironed, dusted and some cooking, down to Betty’s. I came home, finished my work then went down to Betty’s. She had a doctors appointment in Portland of four. So I stayed with the kids till they got home. Walt took Betty and Dawn out to supper. They all went in to see Ed. He has cancer. Bill went fishing. Billie down to see Chet tonight. Carmen to the concert at LR High School tonight. She didn’t get home till late. I went with Betty to pick her up, she had a good time.

It was snowing when we got up. It soon cleared off. Bill did the plowing all around. He went to the dump too. Billie didn’t get up very early. He took it kind of easy. I baked beans, made bread, washed floor. Kimmy up here, she made some brownies. We worked on the puzzle. After supper Billie and I went down to the hospital to see Chet and Bob. Robert is much improved. Chet is pretty good except is weak. Betty took the kids to the movies, but tickets ran out before they got to the ticket booth.
