The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

April 12 - 14, 1976 Kim's 10th Birthday

Monday, April 12, 1976 KIMBERLEY ALLIE HORTON 10 YEARS OLD, VERY SICK IN HOSPITAL

Kimberley Allie Boutilier Horton is 10 years old today. She is in the Northern Cumberland Memorial hospital very sick. A bad bronchial asthma attack. We are all very worried about her tonight. Betty and Walt down to see her after supper. Blood pressure was high, she had a fast heartbeat. She was much discolored, sick and paid no attention. Later in the evening Dr. Herman called Walt and he said if Kimmy didn’t improve tomorrow he was considering transferring her to Portland MMC. Also still later a medic called who had been in and checked her again said she was much more comfortable and was sleeping. She sure shook us all up today and early evening. This is been a very windy and cold. Only 15 above this morning.

Tuesday, April 13, 1976 Kimmy a little better, nice day

Another nice day, not too windy today, which made it warmer outside. I made two chocolate pies. Ironed, done up all my work, down to Betty’s in a.m. In p.m. down to Betty’s until about 2:30 then Bill and I went down to the hospital to see Kimmy. She was a little improved. Not all well, that is for sure and far from it. The nurses were working on her. We came home and then I got supper done up, the dishes etc. and I went down to the hospital again in evening with Betty. Kimmy was more talkative and looked better. Randy over in evening. Betty and I called at Fern’s on the way home.

Wednesday, April 14, 1976 a quite nice spring day

I worked at Betty’s. We done all her bureau draws and closets upstairs in p.m., she went to her coffee group meeting in a.m. I washed, ironed and cooked meat for meat pie. Bill worked at the B. Johnson cottage on long Lake. We, Betty, Walt and I called to see Kim in evening at the hospital. She is better and looks like her old self. Expect to come home tomorrow
