The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

March 14 - 17, 1976 Blizzard

Sunday, March 14, 1976 mild

Quite a nice day. It got a little hazy in p.m. I got my wash done and it dried. Bill, Ilan and Carmen went ice fishing today at Otta Pond. Billie didn’t do much, took it easy. Betty and Walt didn’t do much either. They went to town shopping. Kimmy and Zak up here riding the bikes on the black top.

Monday, March 15, 1976 CARMEN TO DOCTOR, Betty’s last dentist appointment

A very nice sunny day after the heavy snow flurries in early a.m. I did a wash and ironed down to Betty’s. Today Betty had her last dentist appointment, tooth is all done. Also she took Carmen to a new Dr. in Portland. He says Carmen needs to get into the hospital for examination. So she will go this week, would have today but the hospital is full. She has had this trouble for a long long time, back and stomach. Tonight’s forecast on TV for weather is for a major snowstorm. Northeaster. I went to town today, Robert came home from hospital. Chet went up to North Waterford to his boarding house.

Tuesday, March 16, 1976 Rumford 99 Lake Region 73

It got cloudy and began to snow about 10:30 AM. It has snowed hard all day. Tonight the wind is blowing and it is getting drifty. A good game was played by the Lakers tonight, but the great tall guys of Rumford overpowered the LR team. I’m sorry. I was down to Betty’s most of the day helping her clean. Fern was there also, she helped to do washing.

Wednesday, March 17, 1976 BLIZZARD, NO SCHOOL

A very bad blizzard last night, everything is covered and buried this morning. High drifts. What a mess. Bill plowed all morning. I done up my regular work, did a small wash and dried it here in the house. Zak up here all day and till after supper. He enjoys being here. No school in this district and others today. I worked on the jigsaw puzzle tonight.
