The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

A nice day, on the cool windy side. A typical March day. Bill up early and went fishing with Ilan. I did my washing, done all the work up. Did two different ironings. Had sausages and pancakes for supper. Kimmy here in p.m., we finished the puzzle. Carmen up this morning and had breakfast with Billie. Billie been busy all day. Then went down to see Chet this evening.

Monday, March 8, 1976 Billie to the doctors

Clear and sunny, cold when we got up. I went down to Betty’s, helped her get her work done up. I done another big wash early. Betty and I went to Portland to shop. We saw Dorothea, her life is quite mixed up now because of David. He is at her house all the time. We saw Jeff’s drum set and he has a new fish aquarium. Bill worked on the wheelbarrow. He and Ilan went fishing. Billie to the doctors tonight after work. He has to go in Friday morning for x-rays etc. Dr. is quite concerned about his stomach. Chet fair tonight.

Tuesday, March 9, 1976 Bob to hospital

It was very cold, zero when we got up. I done my regular work. I did a washing and a few other jobs. In p.m. Bill and I drove over to Fryeburg to Osgood’s tractor place. In early a.m. I went down to Betty’s, we called Joy. Her wedding anniversary. Robert is bad again. He couldn’t breathe so Pat took him back to the hospital about 5 PM. He has never come back from being so bad this time. Chet not too happy, he has to leave the hospital Friday and he don’t feel able to be up to care for himself. This is been a cold day, some sun, on the hazy side yet enough sun during the day so my clothes dried. Ed Babbitts isn’t doing very good. Dawn supposed to find out today if the ulcer is malignant.
