The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

February 15 - 17, 1976 Betty's Birthday

Sunday, February 15, 1976 Betty and family up for roast pork dinner for Betty’s birthday

A very nice day, a cold breeze blowing, but my clothes dried very good. Today I had the Horton’s up for Betty’s birthday which is next Tuesday. They enjoyed the dinner very much. Bill went fishing in a.m. Billie went with Lawrence for picking up cattle in p.m. Robert about the same. Kim is still alright, no cold.

Monday, February 16, 1976 a beautiful day. Robert not so good,Pat said

It has been a holiday in observance of Washington’s Birthday. His birthday is February 22. The people have changed that same as they are changing everything else in the country (all for the worse). Times have changed a lot. I done another washing today. I ironed, went with Betty and the kids down to the farm auction of Ed Main at Standish. When we came home, Kimmy stayed up here a little while. We started the puzzle. It was so nice and warm, the clothes dried same as in the summer. Robert not so good Pat said.

Tuesday, February 17, 1976 Betty 33 today, snowing when we got up

I done up my regular work. Bill went down and done chores at Betty’s. Then we got ready and went to town. Delores went with us. I got some groceries. I came home, shampooed my hair, put the rinse on, went over to June’s for my hair set. Betty is 33 today. She and the kids went down to Dawn’s. They gave her a party down there. They had a good time. She got a lot of birthday gifts. It has snowed about 6 inches today. A bad stormy week is predicted for the whole week. Betty called Norma Gay. She is expecting her second child.
