The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

January 16 - 19, 1976

Friday, January 16, 1976 COLD

 

Snowy all day. Betty and I to town with Lloyd. An awful messy day. Cold. Bill feeling okay on his diet. The nurse came and gave him a shot. He has to have insulin every day. It has been snowing hard this evening.

 

 

 

Saturday, January 17, 1976 nice sunny day

 

A very nice and sunny day but what a lot of SNOW. It is piled high and drifting. Betty and Walt did the plowing. Kimmy up here today. She did some cooking with her baking set and little oven. It all came very good. I done my regular work. Made a pie, cake, biscuits, washed kitchen floor. Nurse came to see Bill. Lawrence called. Betty and Walt here. Billie up to Chet’s and done some errands for him.

 

 




 

Sunday, January 18, 1976

 

Another nice clear and sunny day. I done my regular work. No washing machine fixed so I couldn’t wash. I did rest of ironing. Took a bath when I got up. Mr. Saltman had Bill’s car today. His wouldn’t start. It was about six below this morning. Billie up to Chet’s. Hortons kids had company. Also they had the donkey out with them. Dorothea called today.

 

 

 

Monday, January 19, 1976 20 below

 

Another wicked cold morning. Sunny but awful cold. I done my regular work and went down to Betty’s. We cleaned her house up this forenoon. In p.m. she and I went to town. Nurse here today to see Bill, everything is okay.
