The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

March 25 - 27, 1976

Thursday, March 25, 1976 Nice Day

 

A nice day, on the warm side. I got my work done up early, got ready and went down to Betty’s. We went to see Carmen. She is the same. On way to Portland we stopped at Dawn and Ed’s. Betty had pizza Mabel made for her. Ed looks quite well. Is very weak. Too bad he is in this condition. He is a good guy. He and Dawn enjoyed things in life together very much. Bill and Billie went all over S. Berwick and other places looking for a tractor. Betty went to the hospital and got Carmen’s records at the hospital. Lloyd and Delores to town. Lloyd’s leg gave out on him. Billie still goes to the bathroom often.

 

 

 

Friday, March 26, 1976 mild

 

I washed windows, dusted, cleaned up the house. Betty got started early, she took Carmen’s records and reports into the doctor. I was down to Betty’s and helped her to get started. I did some washing and ironing. Carmen is just the same. She is very anxious to get out of the hospital. Bill and Billie (blank). Snow is going a lot.

 

 

 

Saturday, March 27, 1976 a very nice day

 

I got up and got my work done. Made a cake, washed floors etc. etc. Went down to Betty’s. Also I cleaned her house up too. She went to see Carmen again, she took  Maureen Momm and Kathy Flaherty. Carmen was very pleased to see them. They had a good time. Bill and Ilan went ice fishing, the ice fishing is done for this year. Billie done a lot of odds and end jobs. Snow went a lot today.
