The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

February 22 - 24, 1976

Sunday, February 22, 1976

Cloudy and rain most all day. I took bath, changed all the beds, done up regular work. Got ready and went to Westbrook with Betty to go to a movie. Tickets were all sold out. So they came home. Kimmy stayed here, we made pies, she took a bath, shampooed and shower. Bill has sat and read all day long. I thought his eyes were bad. We called at Dorothea’s. She is more content than before. She was doing her work. She is kind of upset about David coming back there. She pitied him so much. I hope she holds off for a while. Chet is out of oxygen tent, but not too good, Billie said when he went down to see him this p.m.

Monday, February 23, 1976 Chet quite sick, Bill sent teeth away to be repaired

I went down to Betty’s, we cleaned her house. It was a very cold morning, all day, quite sharp. Billie went to see Chet after work. He is not at all good. Very weak and quite sick. Verna Smith came up to Delores’s house today for a couple of days. Zak didn’t feel good when he went to school and came home about the same. Dr. had Betty bring his stool down to be tested.

It was kind of cloudy in early forenoon, but it cleared and was a very nice day. It got colder toward night and in evening. I did some washing, made a cake, cleaned up the house etc. Betty called, we went up to get milk. Called at Fern’s and Bob’s. We got milk for them. Robert isn’t too good. He is quite discouraged. In p.m. Betty and Carmen here. Carmen cleaned Betty’s car inside. Zak also was here with them, he had been to the doctors. Bill and Ilan went fishing up to Stearns Pond. No catch. Billie called to see Chet again after work. He is still in critical condition. Verna called on us this p.m.
