The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Wednesday, February 25, 1976 water sample

A nice day. I washed, down to Betty’s. I ironed. Bill fishing with Ilan. They said when they got home tonight they are not going again for a while. Fish aren’t biting. I cooked a chicken dinner for us and a fricassee chicken for Betty’s folks. She has been on the road most all day. Walt took a sample of the water to be tested at Augusta. Chet not very good tonight. Bill cleaned Betty’s hens out today.

Foggy when we got up. It burned off mostly. I did a dite of wash. I ironed. I went to town. I was busy all day. Bill home. He got a haircut. Billie up to Chet’s to check this place. He saw Chet at the hospital. He isn’t very good. Betty and I went to see him in evening. I was down to Betty’s early this morning. She took Fern to town. Betty and Bill over to Ernest Ward’s in p.m., bought a pair of binoculars and a (?). BJHS Honor Roll came out today. Carmen was on it. She is a smart girl. The town crew cleaned the ice off the road today.

Friday, February 27, 1976 beautiful day 50 to 70°

I done my regular work. I washed, ironed, mended. Kimmy up in p.m. (no school). She made a cake for the Methodist Youth Group bake sale. Billie down to see Chet after work. He is better. Betty called a little while. Tonight the Lake Region High School basketball team went to Bangor and played the Schenck High School and they won. It was a class B standing, now they are the Maine Champion. They won all their regular games this year except one. Bill took Billie Deming down to Dorothea’s this noon for her to take him into the bus station to go to Stoneham Massachusetts. David was at Dorothea’s.
