The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

January 20 -22, 1976

Tuesday, January 20, 1976 10°

I done regular work this morning. Down to Betty’s a little while. Walt cleared snow and ice off the roofs. Then he and bill started his state car. Bill was busy all day today, and he done chores. He fixed the wiring in the barn and some other odd jobs. Went to the eye doctor. Then he went up to Camp Encore with the boys from BA to shovel roofs. I made donuts. The man came and fixed my washing machine today. Dawn up to Betty’s all day.

Wednesday, January 21, 1976 I washed, mild today

Today I washed the first time for two weeks. It works good now. Man came back this morning and tightened the belts. I made a pie and done a lot of things. Bill gone all day. He worked up to Camp Encore. Betty here all p.m. She went up on the Ridge to take Chet to a boarding home but he wouldn’t go. He is bad off. Nervous state, very lame and other things. 10 above when we got up. Fern, Lloyd have a new TV set.

Thursday, January 22, 1976 eight below when I got up, letter from Celia, my cousin

Cold but we didn’t get the snow they had predicted. It was eight below. Then got windy as the day wore on. It was 12 below now. (Big fire in South Boston, 50 mile an hour winds, three above zero temperatures, this is what came on the 11 o’clock news this evening.) I was down to Betty’s while she took Fern to the hairdresser and got their groceries. I did my ironing today, washed kitchen floor. Bill and Ilan fishing up to Stearns Pond. Billie got his appointment to go down to the NCM Hospital for x-rays this coming Tuesday. Betty had a toothache this morning and last night. Got to go to the dentist tomorrow.
