The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

March 6 - 9,1966



Sunday, March 6, 1966

A cloudy, rainy, miserable day. I went down and stayed with Betty and Carmen. Carmen sick so Betty didn’t come up. Kennie and Dot up, Fern and Lloyd. They were here for supper. Billie down Casco with Lawrence looking at cattle.



Monday, March 7, 1966

A very nice day, normal temperatures. I washed, clothes dried very good. Carmen sick all forenoon. Bill and I called in evening. She was better. Billie up to Chet’s tonight. Chet has a very sick cow. Bill and I called at Betty and Carmen’s. Carmen good while we were there. Got sick before she went to bed. Nice clear moon tonight. Mr. Lowell didn’t come.



Tuesday, March 8, 1966 Hair Set

A very mild day. Lloyd and Fern took me over to June’s. I got my hair cut and set. Took a bath, shampooed my hair. Mr. Popham called. Aunt Ava had company, (?) Hadden and Inana. Very nice mild day. I ironed in p.m. Mr. Popham came down in p.m., paid the trailer rent.



Wednesday, March 9, 1966

Mild, sunny. I washed all my upstairs curtains and stand cloths. Aunt Ava came over. She washed her blankets and a few other things. Betty and Carmen up. We went down town in p.m. Came home, I made a blueberry pie. I sent trailer payment. Set the card to LC Andrews field man. Sent letter to Dorothea.
