The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

January 29 - February 1, 1966 Mike in Jail

Saturday, January 29, 1966

A very nice sunny day. I got my work done early. Joe came and plowed. Betty and Carmen up here for afternoon and supper. Fern here for supper too. Betty to the doctors. She is okay. Carmen a dite tired and fussy.

Sunday, January 30, 1966 DOROTHEA, Bad Storm, MIKE ACCIDENT

Bill called out about 7 AM to plow. Also about 3 AM Betty got a call from Alice (dam her). She blamed Betty from Mike being in jail. He was drunk. Now what, I don’t know. It seems just hopeless but I still have hopes for them. I feel so bad about this. Dorothea called. Jeff is with Denny. She is lonely. Don’t know what she is going to do. Carmen and Betty up. Awful snow storm.

Monday, January 31, 1966

A nice day but heaps and heaps of snow. I washed. Got my washing done early. In evening Billie and I called at Ferns and Betty’s in the evening. We got the Lewiston paper about Mike. I watched my programs. Billie hoarse and not too good. Betty quite upset about Mike.

Tuesday, February 1, 1966

I done up my work. Got ready, went down to Betty’s with Fern and Lloyd. Took her clean clothes. We talked and discussed Mike and his latest problems. She went to see Mrs. McKerron. Called Alice, she said he was still planning to come and see her. Betty and I either doubt that. Betty and Carmen up here today and for supper. Had fried chicken. Bill and I took them home after supper. Betty gave Bill a haircut. Bill and I down to Jean’s. When we came home, Mike was at Betty’s.
