The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

February 26 - March 1, 1966



Saturday, February 26, 1966

Not very cold. A bad storm last night. About 20 inches of snow. Bill worked all day. Betty took me to town. She, Carmen and Fern up here for supper. Billie down state with Lawrence. Bill bed to sleep all p.m. and all night. Brud called tonight. Betty, Carmen and I to Bradlee’s. She did rest of her shopping for the new baby.



Sunday, February 27, 1966

A very nice sunny warm day after a big storm. Bill supposed to work but home lame. Betty, Carmen here all day. Carmen out with Billie all or most of afternoon shoveling. She has such a good time in the snow. Kennie, Dot here, Fern and Lloyd.



Monday, February 28, 1966

Mild. I washed. Got done early. 1030. Betty and Carmen came up. Went home about 3:30. Letter from Dorothea. Also one from Peg. Bill worked tonight. Quite good today.



Tuesday, March 1, 1966 PACKAGE – CHECK $80

Rained hard all forenoon. Betty and Carmen came up. We got ready and took off for Norway. Betty got some groceries. Paid some bills or her light bill. Today she got her first check today. She bought her bathinette. Delores downtown today. We gave her a ride home. Dawn called on Betty today. I got my letter off today.



PACKAGE: Betty got a big box full of baby things from the Demings. Very nice.
