The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

April 3 - 6, 1966



Sunday, April 3, 1966

Bare spots in the fields. A beautiful day. Carmen and Betty came about 10 AM. We didn’t do much all day. Billie down country with Lawrence. Today bare spots in the field. Kennie, Dot, Fern and Lloyd called. Bill and I took Betty and Carmen home. Today we see bare spots in the field. Bill over to the spring. No Mike or call from him.



Monday, April 4, 1966

Betty came up with Kennard. Kennard took me over to June’s to get my hair set. I washed and we talked. Mike called tonight.



Tuesday, April 5, 1966 Letter from Dorothea.

A beautiful day. I washed up all my floors. I made a apple pie. I did my ironing, went to town. Betty and Carmen up. Mrs. Popham called. Ray McDonald called to appraise our property. Betty cleaned up the car today. Billie and Carmen cleaned up some around the building tonight. Mike didn’t call. Betty got $15 check for Mike.



Wednesday, April 6, 1966

A beautiful warm day. Snow went a lot. I made donuts. Washed. Betty and Carmen up. We went to town. I sent trailer payment. I got Dorothea’s letter off. Didn’t do much today. Billie took storm windows off tonight.
