The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

March 13 - 16, 1971


Saturday, March 13, 1971

A beautiful day, snow settled a dite more. It was about 0 degrees about 5:30 AM I done regular work. Bill got haircut. Billie down to Lawrence’s. Kennard called. Carmen and Kim up for a little while, brought us up a treat , a dip Carmen made. Betty called and I went down to the flea market. Kids went too. Called at Sal’s today.



Sunday, March 14, 1971

A beautiful day. I done up my work. Called at Ferns to talk about the house. Kennard, Cliff, Es, Fern, Lloyd and myself. Robert was away. Betty’s folks went for a ride Sunday. Susan went with them and she had supper with them.



Monday, March 15, 1971

A warm day, but cloudy. I went down to Betty’s while she took Kimmy to school. Then we went over to Aunt Ava’s and cleaned up the house. Fern went with us. Betty called. Also Esther came over here in the p.m.



Tuesday, March 16, 1971

A beautiful day. I went down to Betty’s a little while then she came up here. She saw an ad in the paper about some hens to buy. She, Betty inquired about them. Came home. I got a roast beef supper. I washed.
