The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

April 23 - 26, 1971


Friday, April 23, 1971

A nice sunny day. On the cold side. I went down to Betty’s, we went to town etc. Over to Bob and Pat’s tonight. Dorothea and Pat are having a baby shower for Joy. I put a rinse on my hair today. Betty done it up.



Saturday, April 24, 1971 raked lawns

Nice and sunny this morning. Billie raking. Bill gone fishing. Walt to work. Bill raked after he got back from fishing. Billie finished all raking. I went down to Betty’s a little while. She and kids were up here in p.m. Walt worked all day. Bill and I went for a little ride and called on Fern and Lloyd.



Sunday, April 25, 1971 DS TIME

Cloudy all day. Rain showers. Bill and I went to Dorothea’s and called. Then to Allen’s nursery, got some pansies and geraniums. Then to Gray. Called to see a Mr. Dewey Bryant about the guns. Came home up through Poland Spring, New Gloucester, Norway etc. After supper we, Bill and I called at the Deming’s. Billie fenced a lot today.



Monday, April 26, 1971

Cloudy and showery. I went down to Betty’s. We took Kim to school and then called on Joan Smith after we did some errands. In p.m. we went to Norway. Did a little shopping. Caroll Dunn up to Carmen’s tonight. Bob called this morning. Bill has only four more days to work.
