The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

April 27 - 30, 1971 Bill Retires From Town Of Bridgton


Tuesday, April 27, 1971

Pretty nice day. I got up, instead of cleaning, I went to Concord New Hampshire was Susan and Betty. Susan had always wanted to go up there. Took a picnic lunch. Bill home today with a lame hand.



Wednesday, April 28, 1971

Bill still home lame. I went down to Betty’s till after Kim went to school. I cleaned my ceilings and walls in the bathroom and kitchen. Kim came up a little while today. Es and Cliff called tonight. Billie fenced some tonight.






Thursday, April 29, 1971

Bill back to work after being home two days with a lame arm. I cleaned the blue bathroom. Billie done some more raking tonight. Betty and kids up today.



Friday, April 30, 1971 BILL RETIRED

Another partly cloudy day. I went down to Betty’s, we took Kim to school and done some errands. I came home, cleaned Billie’s bedroom. Washed, clothes got rained on. Kim up for supper. BILL all through work tonight for town of Bridgton. He has worked for Bridgton for about 20 years.
