The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

February 26 - March 1, 1971


Friday, February 26, 1971

A beautiful day. Cold, only 10 above when we got up. Snow melted in roads some today. Betty and kids came up. We looked over papers, magazines etc. Esther called in morning. We talked. Dorothea here this afternoon, we looked at old pictures, family records etc.



Saturday, February 27, 1971 $22.50

A cloudy, rainy, dreary day. Up early, done up the work. Went over to Aunt Ava’s. Mr. and Mrs. Warwick came up from Steep Falls to look at the articles for sale. Later honest Dom and then Betty. We didn’t sell. A Mr. Applegate called tonight from Omaha Nebraska about the tickets we have to sell. He wants us to send them to him?????



Sunday, February 28, 1971
 

A pretty nice day. I done up my work. Betty and Walt over to see the things at Aunt Ava’s. Betty bought them. She paid Fern and I. Fern, Lloyd called in evening. Es and Cliff called too. $300



Monday, March 1, 1971

A nice day. I washed and hung some clothes outside. Went down to Betty’s. We went to town and over to Aunt Ava’s. Came home, got my supper to going. A Mr. (blank) called me from New York about the book of RR tickets. I had my hair set. After supper Esther, Delores and I went to town meeting.
