The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

February 22 - 25, 1971

Monday, February 22, 1971 mild and sunny, car is Bills now

A nice mild day. I done regular work, some washing. Got ready, went to Norway with Betty to get shoes for Carmen. Came home, Betty and kids stopped. Betty bought some Italian sandwiches, we ate those. Joy called and girls. Visited a little while and called at Betty’s. Es and Susan here in evening and Sally and Gordon. Clothes dried good today. Paid balance of the car off. All paid for now.

Tuesday, February 23, 1971

A bad storm, mostly snow. Bill worked last night and gone to work again today. He is tired and lame. I was down to Betty’s, we looked some of the things over she got from Uncle Lewis’s estate.

Wednesday, February 24, 1971

A nice day after the storm. I went down to Betty’s for a little while. We went over to Aunt Ava’s. Fern and Lloyd there too. In evening called at Ferns then at Kennard’s. Carmen stayed up here tonight. Bill to bed early after working so much lately.

Thursday, February 25, 1971 $7.50

A pretty good day. I washed windows, dusted, cleaned up the house. Carmen went home early. I took care of Christopher Rager. Es and Susan to Portland. I didn’t go to Betty’s today. In evening Es and family called. Also Betty. I went to town.
