The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

February 18 - 21, 1971



Thursday, February 18, 1971 $3

A beautiful day. Went over to Aunt Ava’s in a.m. Then in p.m. I went to Norway with Betty. Cliff went with us, he had a good time. Came home, got supper in evening. Deming’s came over. Esther and I cleaned silverware. Sue and Tom called in p.m. to pick up some things Betty got for her over at Norway.

Friday, February 19, 1971

A nice mild day, down to Betty’s in a.m. We skun over to Norway for a few minutes. Came home. I washed, ironed. The things I washed were things that came from Aunt Ava’s. Carmen came up after school to stay all night. She is going fishing with Billie, Cliff and Billie Deming tomorrow.



Saturday, February 20, 1971 .05 Aunt card today $.50 on clock, 5me 5 Fern

A snowy miserable day. Billie and Carmen up early and off fishing. Cliff and Billie went with them. Down to Bowdionham on the Kennebec River. Bill and I to town, over to Aunt Ava’s. Alice Boynton called to see about a bookcase. Came home, Bill had to go plowing. He went down and got Kim. She came up to stay all night. Carmen, Billie got home about 5:30. Carmen had a very good time, got some smelts.



Sunday, February 21, 1971

Didn’t get up until 8 AM. Took bath. Bill called to do some plowing. Kim, Billie and I had breakfast. I done up regular work. Billie up to Chet and called, took paper up. He went down to Scarbrough with Lawrence. Fern, Lloyd called a little while. Kim went home when they went to Betty and Walt’s. Bill over to Verdell Holden’s to check coons. Brackett  girls over to play with Carmen.
