The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

April 16 - 19, 1984

Monday, April 16, 1984

Another one of those miserable days. Cloudy and rain. Carmen called. She was home for a holiday. She is tired and kind of on the downcast side. I feel so sorry for her. I hope she will have a happy life. But it looks to me as though she will have to always work and be the main spoke in the wheel. Lo and behold while she was here who followed her but Alan. He took a day off, over $30 gone down the drain. They can’t afford that kind of living. Carmen works and don’t try to see ways to escape a day’s pay. Alan needs a lot of advice. It is a whole future he should be looking into.

Tuesday, April 17, 1984 First thundershowers

Well finally we got some sun today and it looked so good. I done up my work, worked on the puzzle. Fern had a lawyer call on her this morning. Dawn is getting worse all the time and her life is closing in on her. Her condition is very serious, continuous pain. Betty started her housecleaning today, the shed chamber. We had the first thundershowers.

I worked on the puzzle and watched the shows. Got the supper started. Kim here. Had shake ‘n baked pork chops, lima beans, stove top stuffing. Rolls, pudding and Kim had sherbet. Zak went home. Betty got her barn all done. Carmen and Alan called, Carmen having asthma attack.
