The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

April 1 - 4, 1984 Fern to Hospital

Sunday, April 1, 1984

 

A nice sunny day. I done up the work. Bill and I called on Fern. She isn’t at all good. Weak, sick in pain. Came home, we had a lot of callers. David, Walt, Betty, Tom, Charlene, Zak. I got all my reading caught up today. Carmen and Alan called today. They are busy most of the time, a lot on Carmen’s mind.

 

 

 

Monday, April 2, 1984 Dawn to NCM Hospital, mild, snow went a lot

 

A very nice mild day. I washed, ironed, cleaned up the house. Cooked a good stew for supper and some biscuits. Today Betty took Dawn back to the hospital. She is very seriously sick, pain etc. Bill and Billie have a bad cold. They brought Fern a hospital bed yesterday. She is about the same, not too good yet. The doctor came again today.

 

 

 

Tuesday, April 3, 1984 169, 374

 

A beautiful day, not so mild as yesterday. I worked on the bills today. Betty has a bad cold. Bill in bed off and on. Billie is getting sick with his cold too. Fern not very good. They brought her hospital bed today. Dorothea gets her up in the wheelchair. Bill has a very bad cold, in bed most of the day. Kim came up and called after school. Mixed up a cheesecake for me, it was delicious.

 

 

 

Wednesday, April 4, 1984 Fern back to hospital

 

A beautiful day. I done up my work. Watched TV program. Got ready to go to town. Bill is better this morning. Billie is still sick. They have very bad colds. Dorothea called me early. Fern is back in the hospital, very sick. All our Dr. said was she has congestive heart failure. She is having oxygen and IV. She is in a very rundown condition. Dorothea and I to see her. She is very sick and weak. Also Dawn. She is very sick and weak too. Betty and I down to Fern’s to helped Dorothea get the place fixed up. We called to see Minnie at hospital too. She isn’t very good either. Bill up and down, Billie got a load of hay. Scott Howe and Zak helped. Betty is sick with a bad cold too.
