The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

May 1 - 4, 1984 Dawn Died

 

Tuesday, May 1, 1984

 

A quite nice day. It got a dite hazy and then the wind blowed which made it on the cool side late PM. Kim stayed after school for a meeting. Zak had to go to the library. Billie fencing down on Walt’s. Carmen came early to take a shower before she left this morning. I hope and pray she will be a happy girl in her adult life. I’m so concerned about her as things are going right now, it is up to her now to find out on her own. I made three pies today. Dawn not at all good. Dorothea brought Bill’s car back tonight.

 

 

 

Wednesday, May 2, 1984 DAWN NEVERS MORGAN PARKS BABBITT died at 2:45 PM

 

A quite nice day. I made a custard, got meat ready for supper. Betty back to the hospital this a.m. at about 11:30 to see Dawn. They called her from the hospital, the breathing was weakening rapidly. Betty was with her and Dawn seemed to know it. She died at 2:45 PM. It is too bad such a good person and young had to die. She was very close to this family. She done so much for Betty and helping her helped us. We loved her as a very close friend. She will be missed by all of us.

 

 

 

Thursday, May 3, 1984 checks came

 

A quite nice day. Betty done my shopping. I went to town with her but I didn’t get out of the car. I came home, finished cleaning up the kitchen draws by the shelves. I did some other odd jobs. Billie busy all day.

 

 

 

Friday, May 4, 1984 got my hair set

 

I made a grapenut pudding for supper. It rained off and on, not a very good day, at times very hard. I watched the TV soaps. Kim stayed after school. They all got together to get the hall ready for the dance.
