The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

February 2 - 4, 1963 Mike Left

Saturday, February 2, 1963 Mike Gone

Cloudy and snow. Mike went back today, to that Fort Lewis in Washington state. We hated so to see him leave, but he will get back to the East Coast one way or another. We can’t spare him. He is one of a nice family of three. We are now waiting for the day he will come home for his transfer. Betty, Dorothea and I drove him to the bus terminal. Bad weather. Joy and Buddy here in evening.

Sunday, February 3, 1963

Cleared often cold. Icy and crusty. Fern, Lloyd called. Rosalie, Bobby and Donna. Bob, Joy, Buddy and Debbie. Bill worked all day. Billie up to Chet’s. Miss Mike today.

Lots and Lots of Snow!

Monday, February 4, 1963

21 below this morning when we got up. I washed. Cooked in p.m. Joy and Buddy came over for Dorothea and Jeff. Betty sick all day. Betty had affidavits come today from Alice. Also Mike’s letter from his commanding officer. We called Dr. Richards, he came about 11 PM. Betty was having real hard labor pains. Dr. took her to hospital. Dorothea and I went, we stayed.
